Founded in Wuhan on January 11, 1938 as the official newspaper of the Yangtze River Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, Xinhua Daily moved to Chongqing on October 25 of the same year and was closed by the Kuomintang government on February 28, 1947. Initiated by Comrade Zhou Enlai, it was the only legal daily of the Communist Party of China in Kuomintang-ruled areas and holds a special and important position in the history of Chinese journalism.
