East View Releases Open Access Collection of Respected Russian Health Journal

MINNEAPOLIS, USA. June 16, 2020 – East View Information Services is pleased to announce our latest digitization project of the entire print run of Советское Здравоохранение [Sovetskoe Zdravookhranenie] (Soviet Healthcare), now available as an Open Access journal collection, in partnership with Monash University.

Established in 1942 by the Ministry of Health of the USSR, the journal Soviet Healthcare was Soviet Union’s premier scientific public health journal covering issues related to public health, social hygiene, health policy, and health education. The journal regularly published original research and commentaries on the history of medicine and healthcare, the economic and social components supporting the Soviet healthcare system, as well as reports on and proceedings from conferences dedicated to healthcare and the medical profession.

The digitization project came about when a global group of researchers required access to Soviet Healthcare. “Our library directed us to East View since they are a major supplier of Slavic materials to Monash University’s library collections,” said Associate Professor Paula Michaels, lead faculty member on the project, “Then, we learned about their robust digitization service team, so they were a natural fit to get involved in the project.”

East View was able to offer a solution to source, digitize, OCR, create metadata at the article level and host the content, plus, negotiated the rights for open access, which Monash University Library supported, with funding from the Ada Booth Benefaction. The content is hosted on East View’s Universal Database platform so any other East View subscribed content previously acquired by Monash University is cross-searchable with this Open Access collection.

Open Access to Soviet Healthcare is through East View’s Universal Database platform at https://dlib.eastview.com/browse/publication/127586

East View’s collaborative digital preservation efforts have yielded exciting partnerships supporting the creation and ongoing management of digital archives, including these projects:

East View is experienced in technological development and implementation of digital preservation, and we can leverage multiple funding sources (budget lines, grant funds, gifts), and develop sustainable digital products that preserve a library’s precious rare items, increase access and discoverability, and remove the onus of technological obsolescence from librarians and archivists.
