Minneapolis, MN, USA. May 21, 2019—Kavkaz, published in Tiflis (Tbilisi), Georgia, between 1846 and 1918, was the first Russian-language newspaper in the Caucasus. Kavkaz grew to become the preeminent newspaper in the Caucasus during the Russian Tsarist era.
“Kavkaz’s mission was to promote Russian Imperial influence in the Caucasus while at the same time acquainting the Russian public with the vibrant cultures and traditions of the Caucasus,” said Kent D. Lee, East View’s President/CEO.
Kavkaz not only served as the Russian Empire’s official newspaper of record in the Caucasus, it also featured historical, cultural and archaeological writings by prominent public and cultural figures.
East View has collected and uploaded to its platform all known and available issues from the 70+ years run of this important regional publication, making this the most complete online collection of this newspaper. Pages are displayed full-image format, and the original Old Russian content is text searchable.
This resource will be of interest to scholars of Russian Imperial history in the 19th century, Russian pre-revolutionary period, and the history of Georgia and South Caucasus.
