East View Congratulates Dmitry Muratov, Editor-in-Chief of Novaia gazeta, on the Nobel Peace Prize

MINNEAPOLIS, USA. December 14, 2021 –– East View Information Services congratulates 2021 Nobel Peace Prize winner Dmitry Muratov, co-founder of the pro-democracy newspaper Novaia gazeta. Currently serving as the newspaper’s Editor-in-Chief, Mr. Muratov is well known as a fearless advocate for the freedom of expression and the press.

At the Nobel Peace Prize award ceremony on December 10, 2021, Mr. Muratov said during his speech, “’Aren’t you afraid?’ is the most common question my colleagues get. But this is their mission. As governments continually improve the past, journalists try to improve the future.” The awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to Mr. Muratov is well-deserved recognition of this important work and sends a clear message in support of the critical role independent media plays in the modern world.

Launched in 1993, Novaia gazeta (Новая газета, The New Newspaper) is a popular independent Moscow newspaper known for critical investigative reporting and its work to expose corruption, abuse of power and violation of laws amongst the government and main financial structures of modern Russia. Sometimes referred to as “Russia’s bravest media outlet,” Novaia gazeta has been consistent in its reporting of contentious issues, such as war crimes in Chechnya, human rights violations, persecution of LGBTQ+ activists, torture in Russian prisons, and more, even in the face of seeing several of its journalists assassinated for their work, including Yuri Shchekochikhin, Anna Politkovskaia, Natalia Estemirova, Stanislav Markelov, and Anastasia Baburova.

East View has distributed Novaia gazeta to the global research and academic community since 2001, and we are pleased to announce that we are in the final stages of creating a full-text and full-image digital archive of Novaia gazeta (1993-2020). This digital archive will be a valuable resource for students and researchers throughout the world, showcasing Novaia gazeta’s development as an influential independent voice and providing insight into the challenges facing independent journalism in Russia.
