New Tools, Cross-Searching Enhance Global Press Archive Experience

MINNEAPOLIS, USA. February 1, 2021 –East View Global Press Archive® (GPA), a groundbreaking program from East View Information Services to create the most comprehensive collection of digital news sources from around the world, now offers users a more robust research experience through a series of platform enhancements at gpa.eastview.com.

Key to these upgrades is the ability now to easily and effectively search across all GPA collections, including Open Access content, institutional purchased content, and any custom newspaper digitization projects hosted on the GPA platform.

With content spanning from the early 1800s to the present, GPA currently includes over 1,500 newspapers, 450,000 issues, and 4.7 million pages of content, with 17 countries and 12 languages represented. This includes millions of pages of Open Access content from China, Mexico, and the Middle East and North Africa. GPA will only continue to grow, with plans to add more than 4 million pages of content in 2021, including a new Open Access collection of newspapers from imperial Russia.

With such an expansive portfolio, cross-searching is key to GPA’s mission, as it allows researchers to truly experience the world’s newspapers on a global, unified scale, and not just within the confines of a specific region, language or collection.

In addition to cross-search capabilities, GPA has expanded the features and tools available to users of the platform. This includes new virtual keyboards in Arabic, Russian, and Turkish, and, coming soon, expanded interface language options including Arabic, Chinese, German, and Russian. Enhancements also include new clipping and text extraction tools, as well as citation generators.

“East View is proud to contribute to academic research and the Digital Humanities with our GPA program,” said Bryan Benilous, the director of East View’s Newspaper Products division. “The new tools and capabilities of the GPA platform will allow researchers to explore the depth of history across continents with a set of robust features and functions designed to simplify the process. We are excited to see new research that emerges from these efforts.”
