Minneapolis, MN, USA. April 4, 2018—Vietnam under French Rule, 1919-1946: The Nationalist Challenge and the Japanese Threat, is the first in a new series of primary documents available in Cambridge Archive Editions Online, a joint effort by Cambridge University Press and East View Information Services.
Now scholars will be able to trace the struggle between colonialism and nationalism in 20th Century Indochina from a unique British perspective, in the form of 3,500 pages of reports and memoranda unlocked from the UK National Archives for Web access.
Riveting materials in Vietnam under French Rule include an ‘insignificant’ appeal by a young Ho Chi Minh at the 1919 Paris Peace Conference; unsealed material on Ho’s imprisonment in Hong Kong during the 1930s; a ‘gentleman’s agreement’ between Britain and Chiang Kai-shek over spheres of influence in Indochina; wartime dispatches detailing Japanese occupation; and the last published edition of the Times of Saigon. Scholarly editors have carefully selected, described, and arranged each document chronologically in thematic sections.
“No other collection delves this deeply into the Vietnamese struggle for nationhood under successive yokes of Chinese domination, Japanese occupation, and French colonial rule,” said Kent Lee, East View’s President/CEO.
