East View to host Chinese databases from Taiwan

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
February 18, 2004

Minneapolis, MN - Greatman Knowledge Management Group has selected East View Information Services to establish and maintain a Web site in the West for Greatman's Complete Classics Collection of Ancient China, Taiwan Literature Series and Complete Treasury of Chinese Fine Art databases.

In April 2004 the Complete Classics Collection ("Gujin tushu jicheng") will debut online at http://ancientchina.eastview.com. Web access to the literature and fine art databases will follow later in 2nd quarter 2004.

First published in 1726, the Complete Classics Collection chronicles China's scientific discoveries, technical advances, literary achievements and cultural developments in 64 printed volumes. Complete with punctuation, the digital version of the Complete Classics Collection is based on the latest 1934 edition, and features all original text and illustrations.

This opens new doors for Western scholars and students on 5,000 years of Chinese civilization from its dawn to the Qing Dynasty, said Steve Fan, President/CEO of Greatman's parent firm, United Data Banks Inc. in Taipei.

East View will also offer other Greatman collections, including:
  • the Taiwan Literature Series or 'Encyclopedia of Taiwan,' the largest collection of primary reference materials on Taiwan ever compiled (over 48 million Chinese characters), in original format.
  • the Complete Treasury of Chinese Fine Art, which features 50,000 artistic masterpieces, from antiquity to the mid-20th Century, on 50 CD-ROMs.
All three collections will be available as campus Web subscriptions and for purchase on CD-ROM, with free Web access to CD-ROM purchasers. After six years Web subscribers may request free backup media for archival storage.

East View, the Western host of the China National Knowledge Infrastructure at http://china.eastview.com, has been providing libraries and researchers in academe and government with hard-to-acquire information since 1989.
