at the 2007 SLA Annual Conference in Denver

sponsorship of the "2007-2008 PAM International Membership Award". Muhammad Shahid
Soroya will be attending the Special Libraries Association (SLA) Annual Conference
in Denver, June 3-6, 2007 as this year's winner of the award.

the opportunity to be an active member of SLA and SLA-PAM. Our congratulations go

At the SLA conference Mr. Soroya will give an overview of the Digital Library Program
of the Higher Education Commission in Pakistan. He will explain the vision of the
Program and how it strives to meet the information needs of the higher education
and research sector in Pakistan by providing online access to high-quality scholarly
information, according to Joseph Kraus of PAM, the Physics, Astronomy and Mathematics
division of SLA.
Mr. Soroya will also speak at "International Issues in Developing Countries" on
Monday, June 4th, as one of three speakers on the panel covering "Programs to provide
free or low-cost access to scholarly information to promote higher education and
research in developing countries."
"I hope this event will be informative for me and I shall learn from other professionals
coming from developed countries," wrote Mr. Soroya.

About Muhammad Shahid Soroya:
Muhammad Shahid Soroya is currently a librarian at the School of Mathematical Sciences
at Government College University in Lahore, Pakistan. His professional duties are
acquisitions, technical processing and supervision of the circulation department.
"The school has hired the services of world class mathematicians from the USA, UK,
France, Germany, Romania, Russia and other parts of the world," said Soroya. There
are 73 Ph.D. scholars registered and Soroya provides specialized reference services
to these research scholars.
Muhammad Soroya received his Masters in Library and Information Science from the
University of the Punjab in 2001 with distinction. His first research paper was
published in 2005 and two other abstracts have been accepted, according to Mr. Soroya.
He completed his Masters in Philosophy in 2006 and now is a research scholar for
his Ph.D. He graduated in Law in 2006.
Professionally, Soroya joined the Pakistan College of Law in 2001 as Librarian,
then joined the School of Mathematical Sciences, Government College University,
Lahore in 2003, where his first professional experience was developing a Mathematical
Library from scratch.
Among other projects, he has been involved in the promotion of mathematical activities
in Pakistan, was Chief Organizer of the "National Mathematical Olympiad" in 2005
and a member of the Pakistan Kangaroo Commission in 2006.
