The Russian National Atlas: The 4-volume set destined to comprise the definitive geographic set on Russia of this Century
Volume 2 now Available to Order!
The Russian Ministry of Transportation, in conjunction with the Federal Agency of Geodesy and Cartography, has released Volume 2 "Environment (Nature). Ecology" of the spectacular reference work: Natsional'nyi atlas Rossii (The National Atlas of Russia).
Volume 2 focuses on the wide range of natural and environmental features found across the territory of Russia: the evolution of Russia’s geography, the status of today’s ecological conditions, natural resources of Russia, and more.
Volume 2 is divided into 15 sections showing maps on various topics as follows:
n Introduction n Historical evolution of Russia’s geography, from the Pleistocene to the Holocene eras, including the development of flora and fauna over the last 150,000 years n Geological-geophysical structures and resources, including a number of maps dedicated to protecting the Earth’s geological environment, such as geysers, volcanoes, and more n Geomorphologic structures of the Russian territory, shown by satellite imagery n Climate and climate change as a result of natural and anthropological factors and data on temperature and wind velocity, atmospheric precipitation, humidity, and snow cover n Water resources and surface water, and specifically how hydropower resources are utilized, ground water and aquifers, and the effects of hydrological phenomena: flooding, tsunamis, and more. n Glaciers and permafrost, by district, and view of various mountain areas of Russia and on Arctic Ocean islands. n Seas and sea resources, covering the physical, chemical and hydrological characteristics of the seas surrounding the territory of Russia, including large lakes and water basins, with information on density, salinity and temperature of water at different depths. n Soil cover and ground resources, showing general characteristics and structure of the basic soil types, including data on fertile soil and temperature levels. n Animal species, showing the biodiversity of land and sea species populations, including rare and disappearing, from large to small: fish, whales and other mammals, mollusks, zooplankton, and more. n Vegetation, specifically types and kinds, such as forests showing types of trees, within varying zones and altitudes, as well as evolution over certain intervals of time. n Landscape and the Environment. n Anthropology and ecological situation. n Recreational resources and nature protection. n A special index of geographical names, glossary and reference data to simplify work with the maps
Many sections are supplemented with profiles, tables and diagrams, satellite imagery and original photography.
A section of maps are devoted to the protection of nature, environmental contamination and national wildlife management reflecting natural conditions and anthropological factors in the development of ecological conditions. Also shown are trends for change in the environmental situation.
The National Atlas of Russia is an official government publication, produced in cooperation with the authority of the Government of the Russian Federation.
